A wise man once told me, don’t worry so much about the weather, just make sure the climate is okay. We were in a pub garden and my first thought was, do we need to move inside? I then gathered my thoughts and realised what he meant.
My manager was trying to get me to understand, we should be less concerned about what the impact could be over, say, a few days / weeks / months (operational), as long as, over time (strategy), all is okay.
In our professional lives, we on a daily / weekly basis make many decisions. Some may seem positive, some may seem negative. Instead of looking at them individually, or within, say, a ‘project’, we need to think big; look at the long-term. There will always inevitably be operational concerns but the point is that these are less important than strategic issues. Making a fast buck is less preferable than overall longer term profitability.
Remember: the grapes in your wine and the barley and hops in your beer need rain as well as sunshine to grow.
